What to Expect

Schedule Appointment

Call us or schedule through our online portal to set up your first appointment today! You will be invited to join our patient portal through SimplePractice, where you will receive access to your registration forms, easy worry-free billing, messaging center and more!

Please Note: Your time is valuable! Please remember to have all of your registration forms completed before your consultation, as it allows us to dedicate your entire consultation time to discussing your concerns and questions.

All new patients must complete a consultation with our acupuncturist to determine your needs, expectations, and whether or not Acupuncture is a good fit for your concerns. During this time, you will be able to meet with Francis to go in depth about your questions, and at this time he will determine your treatment options.

Please Note: There is a consultation fee of $50 per person, which may be applied towards the cost of your first treatment. The cost of treatment is determined after your consultation, in which the acupuncturist will tailor a treatment specific to your needs.

After your consultation, if it is determined that acupuncture is a good fit for your needs, we invite you to begin treatment with us. Please see our advisories list for a comprehensive list of instructions to follow and take note of. Our staff is glad to assist you in scheduling all future appointments, and answer any questions you may have.

Please Note: After finishing treatment, patients may feel relaxed, groggy, or tired, amongst other different types of feelings. This is normal and is part of kick starting the healing process.

First Visit

  • Your appointment will generally last for 1 hour.

  • Before your first appointment you will need to complete the registration forms that have been sent to you through the Client Portal invitation email.

  • After checking in for your appointment, Francis will follow up on the information you provided in your intake forms and may ask you a series of detailed questions about any health problems or symptoms you might be having.

  • If you are taking any medication or herbal supplements please let your acupuncturist know.

  • You may be asked to remove your shoes and socks and lie down. Most treatments will only require needling from elbows and knees down. Please wear comfortable clothing in order to have the most relaxing, effective treatment.

  • After swabbing the various acupuncture points with alcohol, your practitioner will insert very thin, sterile, disposable needles.

  • The needles will be left in for approximately 25-35 minutes. As you are resting, you will be left with a paging device that can be utilized in case you need to contact your acupuncturist for any reason. Most people find acupuncture to be very relaxing; however, should you experience any pain or discomfort, please alert your practitioner right away so adjustments can be made.

  • Dietary and/or exercise changes might be suggested if it is beneficial to your treatment. There might also be some recommendations for traditional Chinese herbs if deemed appropriate as part of the suggested treatment plan.

  • After your treatment you’re invited to visit the reception desk to schedule your next appointment. Any herbs your acupuncturist recommended will be available during checkout.

  • Does Acupuncture hurt?
This is a very common question. There are different kinds of experiences during the treatment process. Some patients feel almost no sensation, some feel slight sensation, and others feel that it can be intense at times. Different acupuncture points provide different levels of intensity and usually reflect a patients "prognosis". New patients are usually apprehensive of the treatment process at first, but find after completing the first treatment, the ends justify the means.
  • What can Acupuncture Treat?
From Men's and Women's reproductive health to Pain, to Insomnia and stress, acupuncture can treat a myriad of diseases. This is possible because the goal of acupuncture is not to directly treat your ailments, but to enhance your body's ability to heal itself. By treating your body as a unit and not as a sum of parts, the treatments can not only treat the ailments you complain of that certain day, but surrounding issues that are not your chief complaint.
  • What can't Acupuncture Treat?
There are some limitations to Acupuncture. If the root of your complaint is a structural issue, Ie. Herniated and Bulging Disks, Torn Ligaments and Tendons, etc., Acupuncture will only be able to provide temporary relief. It is best to consult your Orthopedist, or other specialist who will be more equipped to solve those issues, and get you ready for acupuncture treatment in the future.
  • How long should I expect to see results?
The answer to this question varies case by case. The general rule is the greater quantity, frequency and quality of treatment you receive will dictate the kind of results you experience. Bottom Line: You are more likely going to experience better results if you undertake numerous, more frequent treatments in a smaller window of time.
  • How is your practice of acupuncture different from other acupuncturists?
Although there are a growing number of practitioners practicing more distal styles of acupuncture, the acupuncture practiced at Uyayi can be differentiated on the basis that it utilizes Dr. Tan's Balance Method, a distal acupuncture style which is based upon philosophies of the I Ching. In this style, there are only rare occurrences when needles will be inserted into the problem area. There will be only rare occasions where an electro-stimulation unit will be used.
  • I am interested in trying herbal medicine, is this something I can start at Uyayi?
While herbs are not prescribed as a standalone treatment, our acupuncturist often recommends them alongside acupuncture to complement and accelerate the healing process. When combined with acupuncture, herbs can amplify treatment effects by supporting the body's natural healing mechanisms. Tailored to your specific needs and health objectives, our acupuncturist may suggest particular herbs for a personalized wellness approach. By merging acupuncture with herbal remedies, you can benefit from a combined effect that nurtures your body and mind, fostering optimal health and harmony. Of course, we do recommend that you consult with your Primary Care Physician first, and ask that you please inform us of any medications or health concerns we should be aware of before making any herbal recommendations.
  • How does Cosmetic Acupuncture work?
From a Bio-medical perspective, Cosmetic Acupuncture works because the needling may cause micro-traumas in the skin to which the body can respond by increasing blood flow and the production of collagen and elastin for wound healing. The needling, which is done at the level of the dermis, may also stimulate neurotransmitter production. From the Chinese Medicine perspective, Qi and Blood are being brought to the face, Qi is being lifted, and the body's energetic systems are being put into balance. This is why the wonderful side effects occur. The procedure is very low risk because the needling is so superficial; occasionally bruising occurs.
  • Do you take Insurance?
Unfortunately, We do not take Insurance at this time. Sorry for this inconvenience. We do however accept HSA and FSA.
  • I have had acupuncture before at another clinic, do I still need to have a consultation?
We are so glad you’ve decided to try Acupuncture with Uyayi! Though you have experienced acupuncture elsewhere, we do require that all patients new to our clinic meet with our acupuncturist for a consultation before we proceed with treatment. We take pride in providing you with compassionate care, while building a relationship with you on your path to wellness. Having a consultation gives our acupuncturist the chance to learn about your health, needs, and concerns, and allows us to take the extra care needed to provide you with the best possible experience.
  • What is the cost of treatment?
The cost of treatment is contingent upon what your treatment needs are. Treatment cost is variable, and is determined by our acupuncturist during the initial consultation, where our acupuncturist will present you with options.
